How to stay safe on Twitter

Amplifyd from www.guardian.co.uk

The Twitter “crimewave” reached a preliminary peak in October 2009, according to Barracuda Networks, which estimated that 12% of accounts created were eventually suspended as either malicious, suspicious or otherwise misused. In 2008, the equivalent “Twitter crime rate” averaged around 2%.

Last week, sensibly, Twitter launched a new automatic link-screening service aimed at preventing phishing and other malicious attacks.

It also has advice for users on how to stay safe on Twitter:

• Use a strong password.
• Watch out for suspicious links.
• Make sure you’re at the real Twitter login page before entering data.

Twitter is also increasingly deleting mis-used accounts, a spokesperson of Barracuda Network says. “We fight phishing scams by detecting affected accounts and resetting passwords,” said Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter in a post. However, numerous accounts were used for malicious purposes such as poisoning trending topic threads with malicious URLs.

Twitter Officially Turns On Geolocation

Amplifyd from techcrunch.com

A few days ago, we spotted Twitter’s initial roll out of a geolocation feature on its Website. It appeared that Twitter was testing the feature because it quickly turned it off. Last night, the feature went back on, and Twitter co-founder and CEO Biz Stone officially announced it.

While Twitter’s geolocation feature has been live through its API since last November, this is the first time Twitter has enabled geolocation on its site. To start Tweeting with your location attached, you need to enable the feature in your Twitter Account Settings. Once you’ve opted-in, you will be able to add your location information to all your Tweets or choose to add them to individual Tweets as you compose them. You can choose to share your exact location (your coordinates) or your neighborhood or town.

Sarkozy rumour: end of the affair? or a cruel hoax via Twitter?

Rumours spread online but Carla Bruni says she thinks marriage should be forever

By John Lichfield in Paris

Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy in2007, before they were married

An affaire d’état? Two affaires de tit for tat? Or just an affaire de twitter which proves to be tat?

The French first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, said last night that she “trusted” her presidential husband “never” to have affairs. Good for her. And for him. But why is that news?

France is allegedly awash with rumours that both Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla are involved in liaisons dangereuses. France is, in truth, not awash with such rumours. The reports have spread, unverified, from Twitter to the blogosphere to some parts of the international press, without ever being given credence by the French mainstream media.

Are they true? According to one French magazine, L’Express, the rumour began as a hoax by a French trainee journalist. He wanted to see how easy it was to get an unverified assertion from the chat website Twitter on to random blogs and into the mainstream media. Read more at www.independent.co.uk

Making the most of Twitter: top 10 tweeting triumphs

Amplifyd from www.bristol247.com

It’s not easy getting an accurate flavour of you, your brand, your services, your passions, your ethics and your ideal connections across in 140 characters – even seasoned copywriters can find this a challenge on Twitter.

There are so many considerations to bear in mind, making Twitter both a joy and a potential disaster zone for the ill-prepared.

Here’s my top 10 tips for Tweeting triumphs:

1. Don’t sell anything: it’s not a direct marketing platform, it’s social. Promote for audience benefit, yes, but do it with integrity.

2. Be authentic: it’s a true test of your confidence with content if you can be authentic in 140 characters. Be patient.

3. Get engaged: Twitter is not a broadcast marketing medium, remember the two-way conversations really, really count.

4. Observe and follow: if you see content you like, are inspired by, or want to follow, do so. A great way to learn – and free.

Facebook, Twitter Ready Location-Based Features

Amplifyd from www.pcworld.com

Facebook and Twitter are preparing to flip the switch on features that will allow you to share your location with your friends at any time. Facebook is reportedly revving up to introduce the feature, while Twitter is ready to enable the changes on its site any moment now.

Facebook will add friend location information starting next month, according to a report in The New York Times. To be introduced at the F8 developer conference in April, Facebook status geolocation will enable you to share with your friends the location from where you submitted your update.

There are over 400 million Facebook users, and around 100 million of them update their status from mobile devices such as smartphones. In this context, location information attached to your status would enable the social network to target small business advertisers.

Do You Talk Too Much?

Amplifyd from www.bitrebels.com
talk on the phone almost all day long, and the ironic thing is, I don’t like talking on the phone. I think that is why I’m such a Twitter addict. I’m a big fan of short succinct thoughts and sentences that don’t cater to people that like to go on and on and on.

One of the most annoying things in the world is talking to someone that won’t stop talking long enough for you to even reply. For me, it is hard to even listen to those people; my mind tends to wander to other things.

Now there is an app that might possibly shut the pie hole of those long winded people (borrowing the words of the brilliant @CTK1 from here). Introducing: The Talk-O-Meter iPhone app. Hell yeah!

Twitter, one of the most popular social networks in the world. Are you addicted? Maybe? No? Ask yourself this, “Are you really being honest with yourself?” I think the answer might come as a no. I don’t blame you. Something is really fascinating about viewing 140 character messages rolling up on your screen every minute of the day. Besides there are thousands and thousands of articles sifting through tweets each and every day. Now coming back to the actual question, “Are you addicted?”

7 Signs You’re Addicted to Twitter

1. You now think in sentences of 140 characters or less.

2. Whenever a big news item breaks, you can’t wait to log on and see what others are saying about it on Twitter.

3. If something funny/annoying/ unusual happens to you, your first thought is how you’re going to tweet it.

4. You’re considering getting an iPhone – purely “because it’s so much easier to tweet on the move.”

8 Must-Have Twitter and Facebook Add-Ons

Amplifyd from www.pcworld.com

By no means are Twitter and Facebook perfect: You might wish that Facebook made it more intuitive to hide FarmVille or certain status updates. Or, maybe you wish that Twitter would introduce a new feature like nested tweets. Good news: For many of these website tweaks or suggestions, there’s likely to be a script you can download to fit the bill.

twitterHere are my top eight picks for Facebook and Twitter add-ons. Many of these solve common user gripes (such as not knowing to what site shortened URLs will bring you on Twitter). Some, like “Facebook Fixer,” enhance the site and allow you to customize it beyond standard options. Do note that most of these scripts require that you first download Greasemonkey, and not all are compatible with every browser, so be sure to check the requirements before you download a script.

1. Facebook Fixer.

2. Facebook Purity.

3. Unfriend Finder.

4. No Facebook Ads.

5. TinyURL Decoder.

6. Nested Twitter Replies.

7. @Troynt’s Twitter Script.

How to make a trending topic on Twitter ? And how not to

Amplifyd from www.dailybloggr.com

I’m not really comfy with this title honestly, but guess it conveys what its supposed to, right ?No ? Okay let me try and make things clear and possibly put things into perspective.

how-to-trending-topics-twitter

Trending topics are a huge addiction on Twitter. Period. They’re like shots. You have one, and you want more, you can’t just stop at one. Okay, wrong example, but the thing is Trending topics can get you intoxicated.

Trending topics are user created hashtags that gets popular and if the volume is right get featured on Twitter’s list of most discussed topics. That’s a raw an unpolished definition.

Hashtags were popularized during the San Diego forest fires in 2007 when Nate Ritter used the hashtag “#sandiegofire” to identify his updates related to the disaster.

Trending Topics is sort of a wrong name for the thing in my opinion. It should  rather be “Most discussed hashtags” or “Active discussion topics” or something, that’s more sensible and meaningful. Trending is probably the second nature.Read more at www.dailybloggr.com

How To Get Banned By Twitter

Amplifyd from businessontwitter.co.uk

In the early days of Twitter you could do anything and get away with it. Well, not anymore. Twitter has gotten pretty aggressive about certain techniques to get large number of followers.

I talked to consulting client of mine that bought a course on twitter (not mine). And his twitter account was suspended permanently.

So I asked him some questions on how he used twitter.

What I learned clearly shows why his account was suspended permanently.

Some Automation Is Not Good

1.  He totally automated all his tweets using RSS feeds and didn’t choose anything he tweeted. I’m all for automation but that is going too far. Twitter hates accounts that do that and will ban them. Be real with people. Tweet things you really like and want to share. Use automation tools like HootSuite.com to schedule your real tweets and TweetDeck with Twitter liststo look at your twitter people. But, be real first most.
